Yes, it’s that time of year again. In mid-May we’re still enjoying temperatures in the 90s, but a month from now it will be well over 100 degrees in Phoenix. Once more, we offer our prescription for relief and some camaraderie among media types: Our annual Summer Solstice Soiree, where you can enjoy a cold brew (or other beverages) on a very hot day with people who get you and what you do!

The actual solstice starts a few days later, in the middle of the night on June 21, but we can’t wait that long. So please join SPJ 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.’s Miracle Mile location, 1418 E. McDowell Road (just west of the 51) in midtown Phoenix. As usual, the chapter is buying a sumptuous array of tasty appetizers while the drinks are on you.

Admission is free, but please RSVP so we can gauge how many appetizers to buy.

Chapter elections to be held

At the Soiree, we will take about five minutes (no more than that, we promise) to hold our annual elections by voice vote for the chapter offices of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. If you are interested in being a chapter officer and are an SPJ and Valley of the Sun chapter member in good standing as of June 1, 2026, contact Tim Eigo, spjphx@gmail.com, by Tuesday, June 2. We are particularly looking for someone to run for treasurer, as our current treasurer plans to retire from that post while staying active on the board.

The one-year term for each office starts July 1 and ends June 30, 2027.

Again, please RSVP here. Thanks!
