SPJ joins coalition in joint letter urging FCC chairman to defend press freedom

The Society of Professional Journalists has joined Public Knowledge and 16 other press advocacy and civil liberties groups in a letter protesting recent moves by Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr — urging Carr to defend free speech and press freedom, SPJ announced March 7.

“The letter comes as U.S. Sens. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Jacky Rosen of Nevada and Ed Markey of Massachusetts introduced the Broadcast Freedom and Independence Act, a bill intended to protect broadcasters from politically motivated investigations and harmful licensing actions,” SPJ said in a statement. “The legislation would also limit the FCC’s power to revoke broadcast licenses from stations based on political viewpoints.”
