UPDATE 8/27/2023: Donation collection has been suspended on the GoFundMe page that was set up to help support journalists at the The Maui News — some who had to evacuate their own homes — who are working long hours to cover the devastating wildfires in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.
The organizer, Derek Moore, an official of the News Guild-CWA, says more than $21,000 was collected on an original goal of $3,000. Moore reported on the GFM page that the first batch of proceeds — more than $9,000 — has been wire-transferred to a bank account on Maui managed by the News’ ad sales director, who will distribute funds to the staff and to others in the community who suffered loses from the fires.
SPJ Phoenix thanks its members and friends who give generously to support this staff of only four journalists as they gather and report vital information to the victims of this devastating event and their friends and loved ones.
